Emma (to me, her arms full of stuffed animals): Hey girl, can you take this money [hands me a random piece of paper] so we can buy some pets?
Noah (to Emma): He died so now we have to throw him in heaven.
Emma: [puts her hand on my stomach] Mama, you need to grow another baby in your belly so that we can have another cousin.
Me: If I grew another baby in my belly, it wouldn’t be your cousin. It would be a brother or sister.
Emma: It has to be a sister.
Me: Well, I don’t know if that will ever happen, Emma. And even if it does, there’s no way for us to choose whether it’s a brother or sister. If we ever have another baby we would just have to see what God gives us.
Emma: He’ll give us a girl. And she’ll live here with us. That will make me so happy to have a baby in our house.
